New Glasses

I pulled the trigger on a new pair of glasses today.

These are the glasses I bought, incidentally.

Despite that I’m something of a clotheshorse ever since I lost all the weight, my glasses are the one thing I don’t ever really buy multiples of. Even in my former form, I’ve always been pretty conservative about buying glasses. At any given point I’ve had two pairs: the pair I wear every day, and a second pair just in case I break the first ones. They’re all roughly the same style — old man from the 50s — and I enjoy the reliability of not really having to think about having ‘trendy’ or ‘cool’ glasses. I feel like a lot of modern eyeglasses age very badly; in the same way that you can look at a photo from the late 90s or early 00s and immediately identify it from the sartorial choices, I feel like eyeglasses do the same thing. Give me the old standards, that’s what I say.

Of course, the complicating issue is that I’ve historically worn very chunky eyewear. I have a large head (a hatter’s dream, they call me), so I’ve always worn really thick frames in an attempt to offset that I have an enormous head. But lately (again, since losing the weight) I think I don’t need that excess to balance some of my features, so I’ve been wearing a thinner back-up set that I’ve had instead. But I’m still conflicted on which direction looks better.

Thin or thick, the decision rages on… I mean, not really, who cares?

I ended up meeting somewhere in the middle, with the glasses pictured at the top of this entry. They’re a little thicker than the browline ones I’m currently wearing (pictured on the left), but not as thick as the vintage ‘Buddy Holly’ style glasses I’ve worn reliably for the last two decades. They should, in theory, be here early next week, so you’ll probably get an update then. Worst case, they’re wider than either of the pairs above, so they should take a little of the pressure off of my temples and the areas above my ears, making them easier to wear.

Other than that, a pretty unremarkable day. If buying a pair of glasses is the central conflict of your day, I suppose that’s a good sign that everything is going swimmingly.
