A Big Day
On average, I do between four and six miles a day on foot, and then weight training four days a week.
Today is kinda a big day, and I just want to take a moment to acknowledge it.
When I started working out roughly a year and a quarter ago, the idea of being a ‘normal’ weight seemed incredibly far off. I have a very clear memory of weighing myself on my scale, and looking at my BMI, and thinking, ‘You know, with really hard word, I could probably get that number down a little bit by this time next year’. So I put in the work, and starting jogging/running/lifting every day, and now we’re at this particularly auspicious occasion:
For the first time in my adult life, I am in the ‘healthy weight’ category of the Body Mass Index.
Now, I know that the BMI is a flawed metric, and you shouldn’t compare yourself to it reliably because it’s only for one specific type of body, and a hundred other things. But it felt like a good, broad goalpost to aim towards, a sort of a ‘point of arrival’ where I would know that I had put in the work and ended up with a result that I wanted. And now we’re here. For context, here’s where we started, and where we ended up:
Right now I literally just tipped into the ‘healthy weight’ category. I know that maybe tomorrow, or maybe after a big meal, I’ll be right back out of it for a few days. And that’s OK. This is a process, and a lifetime commitment, and a single page from a book isn’t the entire story. But for today, I’m willing to acknowledge that single page and say, ‘Hey, holy shit, look how we got here’.
That’s actually a point of interest in and of itself. A lot of the people who see me regularly have seen me slim down over time, but I don’t think they remember where it started. So I pulled some comparison pictures, and they’re… kinda wild. Here’s some photos from the beginning of this journey, to within the last couple weeks:
In case you’re curious about the specifics, here are some broad measurements:
Start (October 2023)
Weight: 356 lbs.
Shirt Size: 5XL
Pant Size: 56/34
Suit Size: 56R
Current (January 2025)
Weight: 194 lbs.
Shirt Size: L/XL
Pant Size: 34/34
Suit Size: 46R
Anyway, I just wanted to share the good news with you all. I still have approximately 10-ish pounds to go before I’m at the weight I’d like to be at, but I think we’re in the endgame at this point, which is pretty exciting. Thanks for all your encouragement and support along the way as I’ve worked to become a better version of myself!
